SCOPE OF WORK : §
CLINICAL:
1.
OUT PATIENT
CLINICS - Two days weekly dealing with new referrals as well as
follow-up cases covering a wide range of GENERAL PSYCHIATRY, Child,
Adolescent & Family Psychiatry. Also dealing with emergency cases and assessing court and
other cases for the Psychiatric Board. - DRUG DEPENDENCE CLINIC [ 1 session weekly - rotation
with other consultants every 6 months] - Two Group Psychotherapy sessions weekly; one for English
speaking women, and one, for Arabia speaking females ( 1986 - 1993) - Sessions for Family Therapy, Individual (dynamic,
supportive & cognitive) Psychotherapy, Assertive Training', Marital &
Sex Therapy, Hypnosis and Abreactive Sessions. - Pre-recorded audio cassette tapes for relaxation, ego-
strengthening, etc.., are provided to patients. 2.
LIAISON PSYCHIATRY Every fourth day ROSTER ROTA covering the General Hospital
as well as the New Women's Hospital. Consultation with attempted suicide cases as well as other
psychosomatic, intoxication and head injury cases. In-charge for Psychiatric Management of the Chronic Physically 111 Children Ward in the Pediatric Dept. HGH starting April 1992. 3.
IN PATIENT Both male and female wards, consisting of acute &
chronic patients, conducting ward rounds three times a week. In-service training and education for junior doctors is
provided. Court and police reports are prepared in conjunction with
consultant colleagues. One weekly ward round in Long Term Care Unit for Mentally
Subnormal patients, providing a review of all medication and advice on
rehabilitation. ( Rotation wit h other consultants every 6 months ) . A Behavioral Modification program commenced on 1.3.92 under my supervision. §

Teaching postgraduates at Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha Qatar. This was within the curriculum of the Arab Board of Psychiatry 1993. (Dr. Fadel participated in our Arab Board Training Programme, in the absence of qualified clinical psychologists; he coped very well with the teaching of general and clinical psychology to programme‑level‑l residents. In addition he gave a number of mental health lectures in several institutions including Qatar University and the industrial sector).
The West Sussex District Consultant & Educational Supervisor (Tutor) for Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy to The Royal College of Psychiatrists. Described as a lecturer with an enthusiastic and open‑minded approach both refreshing and inspiring. Active contributions to post graduate teaching through clinical presentations and workshops, using techniques such as role-play and reverse role-play. Using patients or users as teachers in workshops with trainees who are preparing for the MRCPsych. (Dr. Fadel has made a substantial contribution to training and education in the Trust. He organises regular seminars on various aspects of applied psychology).

The
Regional Hospital, Galway The professional Unit General Psychiatry
from Jan.
1980 to
Dec, 1980 This is an acute modern 38 bedded unit. 1 worked under the close supervision of Professor Fahy and his Senior Registrar. I held an out-patient's clinic once weekly, took part in committee meetings and day-hospital care. 1 played an integrated role with the Psychology Department in the treatment of different cases using a variety of techniques (Behavior therapy - Assertive training). The Unit provided a sophisticated audio-visual unit for teaching and treatment purposes, in which 1 had a leading role. Also 1 ran a group psychotherapy weekly session as a co- therapist and as a leader. In liaison with other general departments 1 took part in assessment and treatment of difficult cases on the wards and in the Casualty Department, (mainly overdoses, eating and endocrine disorders). I
participated in a twice-weekly clinical teaching session with Professor Fahy,
a weekly journal club and book reviews. §
Child
Adolescence and Family Psychiatry

Dec. 1981 (12 months) §
St.
Anne’s Children Center, Galway This is a major center for child and family psychiatry which serves the whole west of Ireland. It contains residential sections for pre-school children, school. 1 played a part as Medical Officer and Child Dr A G Carroll, Dr M A Smith and 2 Senior Registrars. 1 joined them in a fortnightly out-patient's clinic. 1 took an active part in the different therapies provided (mainly Milieu, play, group, family, individual and behavioral therapy). With the help of psychologists, social workers and teachers 1 shared group activities, psychodrama and counseling. At a later stage 1 was able to assess and treat cases which included adolescent delinquency, eating disorders, enuresis and encoperesis. I was involved in local courses and seminars in Gestalt therapy, Family therapy and Psychodrama. There was an effective liaison with general practitioners and the General District Hospitals. §
Lyradoon
Family Center: A center
attached to the main Unit of St. Anne's. It served mainly out patient
purposes. It is fully equipped with closed TV and video circuits, one way
mirror rooms. This enhanced the process of learning and observing via a
feedback and playback. I took part as an observer, co- therapist and later as
a therapist under supervision. I had
attended a day release program in Kilcornan Mental Handicap Center which is a
village for the rehabilitation of adult mentally handicapped. There was an
active teaching program by Dr G. Frost and his Senior Registrar. §

Cane
Hill Hospital, Coulsdon, Surrey : This is a
big mental hospital serving a large population of South East London. I looked
after acute admission and long stay wards. I held out-patient clinic where I
assessed and treated new patients. I worked with Dr J Bird in Laurel
House in Penge which is a community psychiatric center. It consists of group
and individual psychotherapy sessions as well as a crisis intervention
service. I was attending half-day seminars in the Institute of Psychiatry. Also 1 had been enrolled in the MRCPsych Course in Joyce Green, Stone House and Guy's Hospital 1 took pat in the weekly journal club which was led by Dr Felix Post in addition to the hospital consultants. During that period 1 prepared a number of educational aids for patients in the form of handouts, e.g. coping with depression, how to be assertive, your self-image and audio cassettes for autogenic training. §

Road Hospital, Guildford from

This is a new Psychogeriatric Unit consisting of an acute admission
ward, 2 long stay wards and a ward for the terminally ill,
and a Day Hospital. I
worked under the supervision of Dr S M N Zaidi, (Psychogeriatrician) and
looked after all the wards with the help of an SHO. I gained experience in the assessment, treatment
and rehabilitation of the elderly. 1 had been exposed to a
great variety of organic conditions. I carried out most the psychogeriatric
consultations in the adjacent district general hospitals. I took part in
various multi-disciplinary meetings and led them in the absence of Dr Zaidi.
1 also shared the seminars and journal
clubs in the Postgraduate Center in the Royal Surrey County Hospital,
Guildford. §

Treatment
and rehabilitation of drug addicts under the care of Dr M Browne, assessing
offenders and writing court reports. 2.
Liaison
Psychiatry, regular visits to District General Hospital for assessment and
treatment of suicidal patients and patients who present with psychiatric

Brookwood Hospital is a large mental hospital of 700 beds and serves à
catchment areal of 600,000 population. It is famous for its MRC Psych weekend courses.
There is an active weekly journal club in which I participated with
original papers and reviews and clinical presentations. §

DUTIES OF THE POST: 1.
CLNICAL:
- OUT-PATIENT CLINICS: Specialized
Out-Patient Clinic in the Psychiatry Day Center (The Maelor General Hospital,
Wrexham) every Tuesday morning. Using a variety of techniques include : Brief Focal Psychotherapy,
Hypnotherapy, Sex and Marital
Therapy in adjunct with Chemotherapy whenever is necessary. (Most patients
referred usually suffer from
Chronic Anxiety States, Refractory Depression, Psychosomatic disorders Post
Traumatic Neurosis and Pain patients). General
Out-Patient Clinic in Mold every Wednesday afternoon I see new referals for assessment,
diagnosis and treatment. Also 1 do follow up for chronic patients. Out-patient
clinic in the "T" Clinic in The Royal Liverpool Hospital
every Thursday morning. Dr. M. Forth Senior Lecturer refers some Students
from his Student Health Clinic for treatment. Also he refers other patients
directly from the Ward or the General O.P.C. (Most of these cases are
Obsessional Compulsive Neurosis, Depression, Hypochondriasis, Eating
Disorders and Psychosomatic patients). (In all
these 3 Clinics 1 use a Personal History Questionnaire which 1 have devised
as well as other measurements for Anxiety and Depression. I have also
prepared a number of handouts to patients on "Self- image - How to face
Setbacks - Your Way To Better Marriage - etc". A number of cassette
tapes on Anxiety Management, Ego prepared and used by patients in these
Clinics).
- LIAISON PSYCHIATRY: Assessment and management of
some post-operative cases in the Maelor General Hospital and the Mold Cottage Hospital. Also patients with physical problems showing stress
symptoms.
- IN-PATIENT TREATMENT IN THE NORTH WALES HOSPITAL: Attending ward rounds with
Consultant every Wednesday morning and conducting it in her absence. Dealing
with emergencies. Assessing patients who need sectioning or review.
Preparing court reports and supervising junior doctors
in the wards.
- THE DAY HOSPITAL IN THE ROYAL LIVERPOOL HOSPITAL-. I
conducted ward rounds, assessed new patients, drew a management plan,
supervise groups in action. Supervising the responsable Registrar and helping him with any
problems. This usually takes place on Friday mornings. 2.
ADMINISTRATIVE : Attendance The
Senior Medical Staff Meeting-every month and con- tributing to different
areas of administrative work as well as liaison work between junior doctors
and administration. Conducting
the Medical Staff Meeting every month, explaining vague areas in
Mental Health Act to new junior staff and dealing with their current problems
whenever it arise. I have
prepared "The Medical Procedure File" which is a
comprehensive guide to every new doctor about everything in The North Wales
Hospital. Occasional
Attendance of the Consultants meetings to discuss various problems related to
junior medical staff, training and other issues. Elected
