		CONGRATULATIONS FOR
  THE NEW ISLAMIC (HEJIRA) YEAR
		I would like to
convey the congratulation of the President Dr. Omar Shaheen and myself for
the New Hegira (Islamic) Year. May Allah bring peace of mind to
all of you. May Allah bless you and bring our efforts to spread the
Muslims perspective of mental health in the Global Village to fruition.
		 It is hoped
that the emerging Information Superhighway will promote WIAMH.
We do hope that we all take advantage of this revolution in information
technology. In the future we will arrange to hold WIAMH meetings
electronically rather than the traditional face-to-face meetings. The
International Congress Of the Egyptian Mental Health NGO's was held in Cairo
15-17 February 2000 in Association with The Egyptian Psychiatric
Association. The major theme which cross cut the congress was "Psychiatry
and Mental Health Services in a Coming Century".
		 Dr. Omar
Shaheen: our president was the President of that congress. Dr. Mustafa
Shaheen was the real dynamo behind the scene. Members from approximately 30
countries participated in that congress. WIAMH were over represented.
Dr. Mevludin Hasanovic (Bosnia), Dr. Ijaz Piracha (UK), Farouk El Sendiony
gave several contributions to the congress. Dr. Javed's contribution
was:" Does Schizophrenia Differ in Males and Females ?" Dr.
Piracha's: "Addiction Management: A Saudi Experience", Dr.
Hasanovic's:" Destigmatization of Mental Health Disorders Through
Mental Health Promotion", Dr. Sendiony's: " The Diet Craze
  May Drive You Crazy  ",
Dr. Ahmed Abou El Azayem's:" Role of NGO's in Primary Mental Health
		".
		 Members of WIAMH
met at the congress and they sight saw Cairo.
		 A major session
was held on the role of NGO's. Dr. Farouk El Sendiony represented WIAMH in
  this session.
		 WIAMH members
from Lebanon, Tunisia and Egypt met during early February 2000.
		 Dr. Mohammed
Al-Naboulsi (Lebanon), Dr. Waseem El Slamey (Tunisia), Dr. Omar Shaheen
(Egypt), Dr. Mustafa Omar Shaheen (Egypt), Dr. Farouk Sendiony (Egypt) met
during a dinner hosted by Dr. Omar Shaheen. They discussed the participation
of WIAMH in the XII Congress of Arab Federation of Psychiatrists
which will be held in Tunisia May 31st-June2nd 2001.
World Islamic Association For Mental Health Next Biennial Congress For
  Year 2001

		 We explored
the possibility of holding the next WIAMH congress in South Africa. In
an attempt to do that Dr. Gangat was contacted. We found out that he will not
be able to do the job for specific reasons.
		 We also
contacted the Japanese Islamic Association in an attempt to hold the next WIAMH
meeting in Japan. So far we got no response.

Dr. Ahmed Abou El Azayem President of
WFMH met Professor Marouf Adelkan from Nigeria during an international
meeting held in Algeria. Prof. Adelkan welcomed the suggestion to start a
chapter of WIAMH in Nigeria. If this comes to a successful conclusion
a future location for WIAMH congress might be Nigeria.
		Members of WIAMH
are kindly requested to express their views concerning the location of
our next International congress.   | |||
