FELLOWSHIPS & RESEARCH GRANTS

Fellowship of the Chadwick Trust, University College London, for a comparative study

on homeless mentally ill people in London and New York,  spring.

The Maudsley & Bethlem NHS Trust Health Services Research Committee Grant for

March 1996 to fund a research worker to help me undertake a survey on the Elderly

Graduates in East Lambeth, London.

Janssen-Cilag Company  has approved funding  a research project  to assess the needs of schizophrenic patients this project will serve as a pilot study for a bigger housing research project.

RESEARCH  INTERESTS:

My Ph.D. work focused on assessing the needs of homeless people for psychiatric

services.  Since then I tried to combine my Ph.D. experience with my interest in

Psychiatry undertaking research on homeless people with mental health needs, needs assessment in elderly functionally ill (graduates) which involved my development of a needs assessment scale for the elderly (Elderly Psychiatric Needs Schedule- EPNS). Other current research and audit projects are:

1. I have completed an audit cycle on the length of stay and outcome of No Fixed Abode (NFA) admissions to the Linden Centre, and I am re-auditing this on a request from the Medical Committee. I am also writing a grant application for a research project on the housing of the mentally ill in Chelmsford. This is under the supervision of Professor Stephen Stansfeld of the Centre for Psychiatry at Barts.

2. For the last 2 years I have managed to complete and publish a research paper on the care of the Elderly graduates which I did at the Maudsley Hospital. I am currently undertaking field work for a similar study in Chelmsford.

3. I have completed 4 audit projects. Two of these projects are complete audit cycles; one evaluated the work of the CRHT on patients presenting to the A&E at Broomfield Hospital with DSH, I completed data collection for the third phase with Dr. Lita. I also have completed an audit on the length of stay of NFA admissions to the Linden Centre.

4. In the last 5 years I have published more than 16 articles in peer reviewed medical journals.

5. I am a member of the Research and Development Committee at the trust and have attended the committee's meetings.

6. I am also currently the external advisor to the Cultural Consultation Service at the Centre for Psychiatry, Barts and the London Medical School.

7. I was awarded the Research and Development Achievement Award from the North Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust for 2010.

Teaching: I have over the years shown my interest in teaching of trainees of different grades at my different grades of training. My current teaching and academic activities can by summarized by:

1. I have completed the supervision of an  M.Sc. medical student from Barts who helped analyse the first 2 parts of the CRHT audit.  I have also been asked to possibly supervise PhD students at the Centre of Psychiatry, Barts.

2. I have lectured in the last 2 years at the 2 MSc courses at the Centre of Psychiatry in  'Trans-cultural Psychiatry' and 'Psychological Therapies' courses.

3. I continue to participate in the local teaching programme at Chelmsford by giving presentations on my audits and research and by suggesting academic speakers to the current trust Educational Supervisor.

4. I intensively supervise and teach my trainees and Team members by seeing and discussing every new patient seen by my team to ensure the best and the most effective management.
